: candlestick

: Enamelled on copper. The candlestick has intricate low relief patterns. The base is triangle shaped and has two figures that resemble centaurs. Their upper bodies hold shields and bats. There are scrolled flowers and leaves beneath the figures. There are three ball shapes (torus) on the shaft of the candlestick. These balls and the shaft have relief foliate and scrolling patterns. There is a lip beneath the vessel that holds the candlestick (where wax is collected). This is decorated with coloured scalloped foliate designs in blue, green and yellow. The candlestick has inlaid colours of dark and light blue, yellow and green, most noticeably on the base. The triangular base is held up bu three feet with relief lion heads, these are Eastern in style. The candlestick would have been gilded over the copper and is one of a pair with CP37.2.
