: The photographs which comprise this collection document Parlane Macfarlane's civil engineering career for the Kenya and Uganda Railways and Harbours between 1921 and 1942. The majority of the images are of projects on which he worked, chiefly at Kilindini Harbour in Mombasa and railways and bridges in the surrounding area. There are also a small number of photographs of Macfarlane's family and life outside engineering. Later captions are believed to have been added to the images by members of Macfarlane's family, including his son Ian. At least one of the images in the series of loose photographs, 1999/135/1/1, had become detached from the unbound album in 1999/135/1/2 and it is likely that there are others similar.
