Collector's note: purchased 1937 other bowl bought at the same time given to Uganda Museum.

Shield, hide (possibly rhino), central boss, wooden handle inside the boss attached with hide thongs, two holes on outer edge of shield. From NE Sudan, Beja people. Collector's note: All these were given as a gift set and came from the Diglal of Beni Amar (2000/084/728-30, sword and sheath, knife and water bottle). Note from Wright's daughter for Empire Through the Lens exhibition: [see photograph 2008/084/1/1/5/2] In 1945 a similar shield and sword were given to my father, Armine Wright, as a thank you by Ali Muntaz, leader of a Beni-Amer [Beja] rebel group, after he risked his life to obtain Muntaz a pardon and broker peace. Curved knife, known as a khanjar. Curved iron blade, triple rib, rusted. Wooden hilt covered in hide at back, leather or hide and sheet silver on front. Sheet silver decorated with wire and granulations at top and bottom, hide in between embroidered with metal wire and ribbon. An elaborate fixing for the strap is tied in the middle of the sheath, with large brass rings to attach the strap. The hide strap has a small buckle, and a small pouch attached (for coins?). Collector's note: Somali / Arab, 1942 Yemen

Courbash whip, made from a tapered strip of hippopotamus hide. 'kiboko' (plaited top) forms a stop for the handgrip. Dried into a curved shape. Collector's note:Turkish plantation overseers used this type of hippo hide to belabour plantation labourers. Courts would order, say, 20 cuts with such a whip, it breaks the skin almost at once (it has a plaited knob at the end) most were a good deal longer than this one
