Samuel Plimsoll (1824-1898)

Politician, inventor, sailor’s friend: the original rebel with a cause

Plimsoll’s work saved many thousands of lives over the course of history. Born in Redcliffe, Plimsoll became a millionaire through his own inventions. He then spent his personal fortune on years of determined campaigning to bring an end to ‘coffin ships’ on which hundreds of sailors died each year. The ‘Plimsoll line’ eventually ensured the safe loading of ships, crew and cargo alike.
