Wine-storage jar (meiping) ?Jingdezhen, southeast China Ming dynasty, AD 1450-1500

Meiping (‘plum vase’) jars of this shape (see also N 5374), like guan jars (N 8045) were used as containers for alcoholic drinks and originally had covers, but these rarely survive. The body of the vessel was thrown in two halves, and the join is visible around the middle. Porcelain, underglaze blue decoration. Bequeathed by Mr F. P. M. Schiller.
