Some Commonwealth artists have incorporated Western artistic traditions into their work. Mukul Chandra Dey used drypoint-etching for his artworks, a process that originated in Germany. However he told Indian stories with it. India was under British rule from 1858-1947. During this period the British introduced the English language into schools, attempting to impose British religion, morals and social structure on India. Mukul Chandra Dey was born into and grew up under the British Empire, negotiating between two cultures.
