John Small from Scotland ran a dispensary near Port Maria. He later invested in a coconut plantation, Wentworth Estate, pictured here.

He frequently wrote home to his cousin, giving a flavour of local life during the 1850s to 1870s. He noted down details about a religious revivalist movement, an outbreak of cholera and the arrival of ships and their cargoes from England.
