A small but well-established Jewish community lived in Bristol, in an area known as a Jewry, by the end of the 1100s.

The earliest Jewry in Bristol was situated on Jewrie Lane (now Quay Street). After it was attacked in the 1260s, the community moved to the Winch Street (now Wine Street) area, where two new synagogues were created.

When King Edward I expelled all Jews from England in 1290, these two synagogues became redundant and nothing remains of them today.
