This is a different viewpoint from Rowbotham's 1825 (M2779) watercolour and we are now looking towards the multi-storey car park where 'The Rising Sun' once stood. The names of the streets, Broad Weir and Lower Castle Street, refer to Bristol's history but will be a mystery to most shoppers today. Bristol's Norman castle had been demolished on the orders of Oliver Cromwell in 1655 and only fragments remain on what is now Castle Park. Broad Weir was a street running alongside the River Frome which was culverted during the 19th century and flows, unseen, beneath this area.
