Peter Blake credits the foundation of his style of Pop Art to his working class background. Growing up surrounded by boxing, music halls and fairgrounds, the work he produces is an autobiographical take on popular culture with a desire to make an equivalent to pop music. Still working in his 80s, Blake retains his fascination for all things popular including graffiti, street art and skateboarders. Blake describes the way in which he works as 'like an oak tree?. the trunk is that I'm a straight forward figurative painter and the branches are excursions into other mediums'. Screen printing is a particularly strong branch from Blake's metaphorical tree, producing some of the most iconic images of the 1960s in this medium, including the 1968 piece Babe Rainbow which also features the colourful lines which frame his image in this work.
