Wooden, painted fireplace surround. Tapering fielded engaging pilasters supporting carved frieze, moulded cornice above still acanthus, central band carved in high relief, foliate scroll ending in hound heads and with end sections projecting with applied flowers. Central projecting plaque showing a pair of billing and cooing doves with wheat-sheafs. Gadrooned lower moulding to frieze.
British Archaeology (2/1995/SF480), St James's Priory
One leaf of a double leaf bone knife handle (see also 2/1995/SF76) . The convex surface has been decorated with an incised pattern and the underside shows evidence of horizontal saw marks. The leaf has broken at the blade end. There are the remains of an iron plate at the end of the handle as well as and iron rivet used to attached the handle to the tang of the knife blade. This object was found in Pit 586, which was one of a series of rubbish pits excavated at the site dating to the 1600s and 1700s. Some of the pits produced evidence for a local small scale bone-working industry in the form of off-cuts and partly finished items. - the objects found in PIt 586 dated to the 1700s.
