Social History (TD3363/1-3)
Cream silk evening dress comprising bodice, skirt and belt. Square neck, trimmed with embroidered net, and short sleeves. The front opening fastens with alternating hooks and eyes. The front is cut away towards the waist with an embroidered net infill, slightly pouched. Neckline, shoulders and sleeves ornamented with applied flower and leaf motifs of openwork, padded work and embroidery on net, all in cream thread. Edges further trimmed with ruched gauze ribbon. Buttonholed metal ring at centre back and a belt on the inside with a woven label reading "Jolly & Sons, Furriers, Bristol". The bodice is lined with silk (which has shattered) and heavily boned. The skirt flares towards the hem and the back extends to a small train. It is of the same cream silk and at the centre, near the hem, has applied flower and leaf motifs as on the bodice. The only other ornamentation is two rows of ruched gauze ribbon, one at the hem and the other just below knee level. Side fastening of hooks and eyes. The belt is in poor condition and in two pieces made up of strips of cream silk bought together at intervals by bones. Another section is knotted and has hanging silk covered balls of compacted wool. Schoolboy's cap of dark blue velvet with a tassel of white thread from the crown. Embroidered with the monogram "KS", referring to Kingswood School. Lined with brown cotton and the makers label of Edward de Vall. Name label "LOVE" stitched inside.

The main background image shows the new dock, under construction (?), and at bottom right and left are two circular portraits of King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra. Decorative border motif. Postally used, sent London 25/08/1914 to a Miss Rawlings of Bedminster, Bristol. Red George V one penny stamp used. "O.H.M.S." has been pencilled along the top edge at centre, on the reverse.
