Social History (TD2030)
Dress. Raw silk. Cream with black floral pattern. Evening dress / ball gown. Full length. Size 38 - Label, "Macphail London". The bodice part of the dress has thin shoulder straps and smaller interior straps for hanging. It is boned with plastic and has synthetic lining. The front is pleated to form a overlapping herring bone pattern. The back of the bodice has horizontal pleats. The opening at the back has a metal zip that opens to below the waist. The skirt part of the dress has waist pleats, that continue straight to the ground. At the back there are three tiers of material. The skirt has been lined and the whole dress has been machine sewn. There is a stain under the 2nd tier at the back of the dress and the underskirt has split. 1950s.

Dark green wool/ Worsted "Windsmoor" dress (see also jacket TB3233.2). Dress is short sleeved decorated with fabric bow (same material) on the left hand side. It has a high rounded neckline, no waist and a centre back zip fastening with hook and eye at the top. It has two long vertical seams running down it at the back. Lined with brown taffeta. (There is a small rip in the lining under the left arm)

Skirt, part of ladies skirt suit, brown tweed, herringbone pattern, Circa 1970. Plain knee length skirt, 190mm zip in side seam and hook and eye. Brown acetate lining has been repired in the back. Petersham at waistline. Label in back - same as those in the jacket (" EMCAR" , "MADE IN ENGLAND" , "SIZE 14"). Two loops for hanging the item up. For matching jacket see TD660.1.

Yellow short sleeved dress, pleated skirt, shirtwaister buttons through centre front. Wide pointed collar. Polyester dress , viscose lining. Machine sewn, hand-finished. Dress is made of 6 panels with a small front yoke under the collar. Collar is wide and pointed with small revers, formed by the top of the dress being folded over. The dress opens down the centre front, which has 8 yellow and white buttons on the left-hand side, with facing vertical over-sewn buttonholes. Three press studs are located between the second to forth buttons from the top. The front two panels have 2 bust darts each. Each panel has dart from the bust to the waist which forms a knife pleat, the join with the second panel forms the second pleat. The back has a straight yoke with 2 back darts to waist level. The lining is shaped with a back yoke and darts. Labels are on the inside right and inside left of the item. TD1379.2 Is an associated item - coat hanger with metal hook and wooden bar. The bar is covered in blue felt and is probably for the use of this dress

Olive green cotton bolero top to accompany dress (see TD3084.1). This top is made up of 3 sections. Firstly the waistband which goes around the waist and is tied at the front. Attached to this are two other bits of material 190mm in width. They have 3 large vertical pleats running parallel along each. They have been sewn to the waistband to form large 'v' necks at the front and back of the top.

Underskirt to go with dress (TB3505.1) made from non-woven interfacing fabric (gauze?). This has a line of netting inside, 200mm in width to give the dress volume. It is fastened at the centre back with two hook and eye clasps. See also sash (TB3505.3)

An individual can be seen sitting on a park bench in the foreground, at centre. Postally used, sent to Miss Hodges, 3 Worcester Road, Clifton. Green George V half penny stamp (used 1912-1918). Date on postal frank unclear. Part of the message laments, "When (latter word underlined) will the winter depart!".

Chocolate box, rectangular, covered with an orange paper which is embossed with a gold honey-combe pattern. The date is approx. 1911. On the lid an ornamental gold-metal clasp holds a yellow ribbon which forms a bow in the opposite corner and in the centre of the lid is a portrait photograph of an actress wearing rich jewellwery and a feather in her hair. The picture is tinted with yellow. The box is lined with waxed paper and thre is a small gold-printed label, "J.S.FRY AND SON." Thre is a hand-written label inside; "1911, cost 2/6d, from Mrs Baker, Northville, Bristol." The box is in its original packing box of plain cardboard with a label, "Art Paper Box with circular photo in card frame, ribbon and buckle decoration."
