The Pierian Centre was founded by June Burrough in 2002 as a centre for training and self-development. It closed in December 2011 by which point it had become a focus for community development.

Black and white photograph, printed on postcard paper. Photograph shows a group of uniformed soldiers marching along a street. Handwritten annotation on reverse reads, "University students marching to camp at Barrow. Sept 7th 1914". In the foreground at right is "A.E. Lansdown, successor to J. Mackrell, shoeing forge, smithing work in general". It would appear that this is Jacob's Wells, as Mathews' Directory (1864) states there to have been a forge owned by J. Mackrell at Jacob's Wells. White borders.

He is wearing British Army uniform and has the pips denoting the rank of Sergeant on his shoulders. Prior to the First World War, he was a road surveyor at Winchcombe. He married May Evelyn Roach of Oslands farms, Codrington, Glos., in February 1916, at Wapley near Westerley, Glos. He was later sent to fight at the French front, and was killed in the Battle of the Somme. Only his wallet was recovered. He was posted missing on 01/09/1916, and all hope was lost by October.
