: Photograph of Edgar George Whitcombe of Barley Close Farm, Codrington, Gloucestershire, taken in around 1916 at a photographer's studio in Bristol. He is wearing British Army uniform and has the pips denoting the rank of Sergeant on his shoulders. Prior to the First World War, he was a road surveyor at Winchcombe. He married May Evelyn Roach of Oslands farms, Codrington, Glos., in February 1916, at Wapley near Westerley, Glos. He was later sent to fight at the French front, and was killed in the Battle of the Somme. Only his wallet was recovered. He was posted missing on 01/09/1916, and all hope was lost by October.
