This small and dynamic sculpture was made by Alfred Stevens in the mid-19th century. It is cast in lead. It is most likely to be a model for a sculpture ultimately to be cast in bronze, a more expensive metal. Lead is a heavy and dense metal, that due to its low melting point is soft and malleable. Stevens is best known for his monument to the Duke of Wellington in St Paul's Cathedral in London.
