: Banded sampler. Coloured silks on linen, selvedges at top and bottom and sides hemmed. Cross, satin, back, Algerian eye, tent, herringbone stitches. Fifteen bands of ornament: geometric and stylised floral meanders; 'A-Z' three times 'a-z' (no Js or Us); numerals, crowns, flowering trees, with verses interspersed. Signed and dated in top and bottom bands. Verses: 'Despair of nothing, that you would attain Unweary'd Diligence your Point will gain'. 'If Nature's Gifts shine forth in every part // Let Grace and Virtue Crown her curious Art // If her choice Favours Nature doth denie // Let Grace and Virtue those defect supply' 'Frinds are uncertain Riches unconstant but industry failes not'
