Operating table

Bristol Infirmary established a reputation for excellent surgery soon after it opened, despite not having an operating theatre. Operations took place on the ward until 1755. This table was donated to the infirmary by surgeon Richard Smith in 1786 and used as an operating table for over 100 years. It was removed during modernisation by J Paul Bush in 1890 and used by his family as a sideboard until 1999.
