: posset pot & cover

: Tin-glazed earthenware posset pot and cover. The pot has a rounded body curving in to narrow foot ring, a slightly flared neck; an engaged S-form spout, two strap handles with concave top surfaces and a scrolled lower terminal. It has a domed cover with mushroom knop. It is painted in blue, red, green on an off-white glaze. There are scrolling flower stems springing from a triple hollow rock and conforming stems on the neck; there is similar decoration on the cover; and blue dashes and scrolls on the handles and spout. The cover border has blue 'w' motifs, blue circles crossed through on the knop. Inscribed on paper label inside cover: "Still in the vale the village bells ring round, Still in Llewellyn Hall the jests resound: For now the Caudle-cup is circling there; Now, glad at heart, the gossips breathe their prayer, And, crowding, stop the cradle to admire The babe, the sleeping image of his sire." (Samuel Rogers, 'Human Life', 1819)
