: candlestick

: Copper enamelled candlestick. The candlestick has intricate low relief patterns. The base has three sides, each with two birds with long necks and foliate designs (possibly rinceau).This design is surrounded by turquoise, green and blue enamel. The shaft of the candlestick has one ball (or torus) with scrolling eastern designs with turqoise, green, red and blue enamel. The rest of the shaft is incised with a swirling motifs.There is a lip beneath the vessel that holds the candlestick (where wax is collected). This is decorated with reliefs of swirling designs with a backdrop of turquoise, blue and green enamel. The base is held up by three feet with relief lion heads, these are Eastern in style. Late 12th, early 13th century. The candlestick would have been gilded over the copper and is one of a pair with CP37.3.
