Patrick Cotter O'Brien, 'The Bristol Giant' (1760 - 1806)
Patrick Cotter O'Brien was a well-known 18th Century giant. At this time abnormality could bring rewards and his height made him a popular entertainer.
He was born in Ireland and brought to England as a 'freak show' exhibit when he was 18. His boss exploited him until a Bristol merchant took pity on him and helped him set up as a one-man show.
For nearly 25 years he toured England. In 1785 he advertised that he could be seen by 'the quality' in a room in St James Street, London, between 11am and 4pm for two shillings. The 'humbler sort' were admitted later in the day for a shilling.
