Jan Davies was 15 when she started working at Woolworths on Broadmead in April 1958.

'Our manager was a lovely man. He knew everyone and whether you'd been ill and everything like that. We all referred to him as 'dad'. But if you were in the wrong you knew about it! My friend Pam and I used to get in early and as soon as we'd set up the counters we'd put a record on and dance around. One morning we put on Rocking Goose by Johnny and the Hurricanes very loud. We hadn't realised that over on the other side of the store our manager was having a discussion with his deputy and the floorwalkers. I looked over and I could just see him mouthing 'tell those girls to turn that racket OFF!'
