The Egyptians identified many of their gods with animals or birds: Horus with the hawk, for example, or Bast with the cat. From about 2,700 years ago, animals such as cats and dogs were bred, killed and mummified at certain temples. Pilgrims to these temples could buy a mummified bird or animal to give it as an offering to the god. These offerings were buried together at the temple. At some temples millions of mummified animals or birds have been found.
