Plastic bag from Averys wine merchants, Park Street, Bristol. Printed on both sides with picture of sailing ship and casks and text: ‘Averys / Fine wine merchants / Established 1793 / 8 Park Street, Bristol BS1 5HX / (0117) 9214145 / Averys wine cellars / 9 Culver Street, Bristol BS1 5LD / (0117) 9214146’. Established in 1793, Avery's is Bristol oldest wine business. It was originally situated at the bottom of Park Street, near College Green, in premises that had been used for the storage of wine – if not its sale – for centuries. In 1936, Ronald Avery decided to kit out the Park Street premises with memorabilia from the doomed ship, Mauretania. The illuminated ship's logo, erected in 1938 on the College Green facade, was Bristol's very first moving neon sign. In the 1990s the company sold the Mauretania and relocated to more spacious, modern, premises in Nailsea – on the old Coates cider works site. Averys of Bristol was sold to Pieroth in 1987 and is now part of the Laithwaites' empire. c. 1980s
