These items were worn by girls who attended the orphanages set up by George Muller in Bristol.

Girls made the clothes themselves - needlework was part of their education. There were standards set for girls to reach by each age.

The orphanage opened in 1836. There is no record of what was worn by the girls at that time. A uniform was introduced in the mid 1800s, and most of these items are part of this uniform. In 1930 the uniform changed. The newer bonnet (TD5823) is from after this change; all of the other items date from before 1930. From the 1950s onwards, girls wore their own clothes.

The older bonnet (TD5824) belonged to Olive Adams, whose number in the orphanage records, 703, can be seen on a leather label inside the bonnet.
