A hooded box camera sits on a tripod on the Somerset bank of the Avon, pointing towards the incomplete Clifton Suspension Bridge. The camera is possibly in the middle of a long exposure to capture the bridge building work, which restarted in 1862 after having been abandoned in 1843. Perhaps the photographer, while waiting for the exposure to finish, has walked away and taken this photograph, which is small and falls into the category of a snapshot. From an examination of the appearance of, and light falling on, the features and buildings seen on the Somerset side of the river, it is possible to find the actual image taken by the camera shown. This is probably photograph Mb6010. Both were taken early- to mid-morning on a sunny day between June and September, 1863.
