: a framed colour drawing on grey paper, showing: a half-length portrait in profile of Dr John Haygarth (1740-1827), a physician who specialised in infectious diseases, most notably the treatment of fever in patients and the prevention of smallpox; his work was instrumental in reducing deaths by smallpox in Chester, where he had practised and lived from 1766; Haygarth moved from Chester to Bath in 1798, where he lived and worked until his death, and where this portrait was probably made; for an Ellen Sharples portrait of the sitter, see Mb801.100
