: a framed colour drawing on grey paper, showing: a half-length portrait of General William North (1755-1836), army officer and US politician; he entered the continental (revolutionary) army in 1775 and became a Second Lieutenant the following year, after which he rose through the ranks; he left active service in 1787 and settled in Duanesburg, near Schenectady, New York, where he embarked on a political career; in 1798 he was appointed Adjutant General of the army, a position he held for two years and one that carried the rank of Brigadier General
