Richard Long was born in Bristol and continues to live here. He has exhibited internationally for over 25 years and his work has taken him to remote mountains and deserts all over the world. In 1989, he won the Turner Prize. The source of his work is nature. Much of his work with the landscape is ephemeral - a circle of stones, a straight line walked through the dew, marks scraped into scree or made with the ash from his camp fire - and is recorded in photographs. He also brings natural materials into galleries, as in this work of 1997, using unfinished, roughly cut pieces of Delabole slate from North Cornwall.
