: a bronze bust, on a wooden plinth, showing: the head of Ernest Bevin (1881-1951), trade unionist and politician, who was born in Somerset and spent his early life as an unskilled worker in Bristol, firstly as a butcher's assistant, and then a van driver for a mineral water company, before eventually becoming a paid trade union official for the Docker's Union at Avonmouth; later he became the General Secretary for the Transport and General Workers Union, before being elected unopposed as MP for Central Wandsworth, after which he served in Winston Churchill's coalition government during the second world war
