This koala bear by the sculptor Charles Upton (1937-1950), who lived in Birmingham, is carved from Hopton-Wood limestone, quarried in Derbyshire. It is a particularly fine type of stone, well suited to carving. The hair on the ears and the folds on the neck of the koala bear are very detailed. The distinct tool marks on the base contrast with the smooth, polished surface of the koala bear, making you want to stroke it.
