La Bacchante

Although Bourdelle had left Rodin's studio the year before, the expressive realism of the older artist is clear in this sculpture. This follower of Bacchus, the Greek god of wine, vigorously crushes grapes underfoot. She stretches upwards in a complicated pose. Her left arm raises vines and a vessel above her head, which is nestled into her right shoulder, while she steps onto a rocky peak.
