: All four edges turned under twice and back-stitched. Worked in cross stitch in red: 'He shall feed His//flock like a shepherd//he shall gather the//lambs with his arm//and carry them in//his bosom'. Exhibition label for Na173-182: These samplers show Martha's progression from Stage III to Stage VII; her first effort at Stage VI was considered inadequate and had to be repeated. The cutting of paper patterns was included in the sewing curriculum. The process shown in the samplers include seaming (run-and-fell, sew-and-fell), darning, attaching a tape, patching, gathering, making a cuff, working a buttonhole, making a covered button, marking, darning, knitting and turning a heel.
