: Pattern for an infant's sleeved bodice: under-arm seams tacked, sleeves tacked in place; neck and sleeves edged with pink paper. Exhibition label for Na173-182: These samplers show Martha's progression from Stage III to Stage VII; her first effort at Stage VI was considered inadequate and had to be repeated. The cutting of paper patterns was included in the sewing curriculum. The process shown in the samplers include seaming (run-and-fell, sew-and-fell), darning, attaching a tape, patching, gathering, making a cuff, working a buttonhole, making a covered button, marking, darning, knitting and turning a heel.
