Supporters of the campaign to abolish the slave trade encouraged the use of their symbol to publicise the cause. It showed the enslaved African as a passive figure, asking for help from his white brothers and sisters. In fact, many enslaved Africans actively resisted slavery. Through open rebellion and quiet sabotage, they helped to make slavery uneconomic as a system of production, and turn public opinion against the slave trade.
