William Green, a jeweller, was a local agent for the East India Company. The Company had a monopoly on the import of tea from 1600 until 1834. Green's guarantee that all tea and coffee was 'free from adulteration' was important, since it was common practice to 'bulk up' expensive foods with cheaper ingredients.
