The monarch, the Bristol Corporation and the guilds set standards for weights and measures, a role now carried out by Bristol City Council's Trading Standards department. This measure from the time of Queen Elizabeth I has the royal initials and CB for City of Bristol, to show it is an approved measure. 1601
