A slaving voyage was expensive to set up: most slaving voyages were financed by a partnership of several merchants, to share the costs and the risks as well as the profits. Most of the Africa's owners were Bristol-based, though Samuel Galton was a Birmingham gun-maker who both owned shares and supplied trade goods.
