This book shows that the cane was given to 10-year-old H Woodworth (item 47) for
'disgraceful writing', and to 11-year-olds Bebbington and Ball (items 59 and 60) for
'writing disgusting notes'.
Discipline in school was often strict and children were beaten for wrong-doings such
as talking in class and inattentiveness.
