The Exchange opened in 1742 as a place for business. At some point the corn market moved to the Exchange and was still running there in the 1950s. Buyers could compare samples and negotiate a price with the various sellers at their desks.
In the 1860s, the corn market was held on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. By the 1950s at the Exchange it was held only on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
