: Ceramic toilet with a raised oak leaf design. Made from high fired earthenware. Decorated with relief mouldings of oak leaves and acorns, the toilet bears a transfer of the makers’ brand “UNITAS” and ”PATENT AFTER FLUSH CHAMBER”. Impressed marks “89/5”, “21” (twice) &, within an impressed oval,”TWYFORDS HANLEY” around a lovers knot with “TT”. There are areas of blue staining within the toilet bowl as a result of cleaning while the toilet was in use. The 'Unitas' by Thomas W. Twyford, Hanley, Stoke on Trent, 1886. This is a 'wash-out' type closet characterised by the upper shallow pool of water separate from the water in the trap. This one was installed in the Lord Mayor's Chapel, Bristol, in about 1889.
