Trade musket

Cotton cloth from India was the main item carried to Africa on a slaving ship, but a large part of the trade cargo consisted of guns and ammunition. The flintlock muskets and pistols for the 'Africa trade' were often cheaply made and of poor quality. Most were made in Birmingham by the many small gunmakers in the town.

: Flintlock musket. Walnut full stock. Crude iron trigger guard, no butt plate or ramrod pipes. Iron octagonal to round barrel, secured to the stock by 2 copper bands. Ramrod missing. Military style flintlock with ring-necked cock, with indistinct signature (possibly Coulson - not recorded). Secured to the stock by 1 sidenail.
