On the inside cover is 'Lord Roberts's Message', which is handwritten in black ink and reads; '25th Aug. 1914/ I ask you to put your trust in god. He will watch over you and strengthen you. You will find in this little Book guidance when you are in health, comfort when you are in sickness, and strength when you are in adversity-/ Roberts'. Written in pencil on the opposite page is; 'With Best Wishes/ A "God Speed"./ From [Fred A Linsell] [M Baron] March 1915.' Written at the back in pencil are the names and army numbers of several men.
