In 1889, police helped a baker deliver bread to flooded homes. 36 hours of continuous rain following sudden thawing of heavy snow left areas such as Bishopston, Eastville and Montpelier under water. The area around Mina Road looked like a huge lake. One kind-hearted man took pity on some children stranded at Mina Road School and ferried them home.
