There was a fish market in Bristol from at least 1615. At that date it was in the Shambles near Bristol Bridge, and later moved to near the Quay Pipe in St Leonarrd's parish, by order of the Common Council - which also ordered that 'no fish for the future sold at any other place in the city.'
In the 1900s many of the markets were moved into purpose-built sites, to make business easier and cleaner. A new Fish market was built on St Nicholas Street, and continued in business until the 1970s.
The image shows a lorry of one of the Bristol fish companies, Flook & Co (Bristol) Ltd, unloading at the Fish market. Note the fishmonger, in a white coat, is wearing rubber boots - essential protective equipment for someone working in the market.
