: 2 figures, wood, carved, painted, red, black and white, standing. Malangan. Made for the funerary rites on New Island. Figure of a man holding a staff. The head has the elaborate decoration and earpieces of a Malangan mask. Hair of plant fibre. Piece at the end to put in the ground. Shell eyes. A label with it reads ' Normally burnt a year after death. Rare. But this shows no sign of having been used in funerary rituals. 2 separate pieces shown in Commonwealth Institute photographs: a male figure, standing, painted, with a spike to hold it in the ground, and a stylized male figure, with very thin limbs and holding a staff.
