Part of a christening gown. Deep cream viyella type fine woollen coat and overlying cape. Lined in silk. Decorated with machine embroidery of stylised flowers and an embroidered, broderie anglaise style self fabric trim. Jacket has a yoke and sleeves in the broderie anglaise material. Hem has broderie anglaise and scalloped border. Edge to edge front fastening, tied with 3 bows. Cape is attached at the collar with a round yoke, broderie anglaise and lined with fine silk (silk damaged and shattering in places). The neck fastens with two 25mm wide grosgrain ribbons. Some moth damage.

Cream silk shantung dress with a round lace trimmed neck. The front has a broad band of cream smocking. Back has two panels of smocking.The hem is finished on the outside with feather stitch. Back opening has ribbon ties at the neckline and five pairs of pearl buttons with worked button loops from one of each pair to secure the other. The sleeve is gathered in to the bodice. At the wrist is a band of cream smocking. The dress is hand stitched throughout. Lots of repairs especially under the arms.

White lawn cotton gown with a yoke bodice of decorated vertical bands. The neckline is trimmed with lace and there is a white ribbon threaded through eyelets in the neck band. The long skirt is gathered into the yoke and has a deep hem surmounted by two bands of three pin tucks. The sleeve is set-in with gathers and is gathered into a decorated band at the wrist which is trimed with lace. The back opening has ties at the neck and two pearl buttons with hand stitched button holes. There is a meal hook and worked loop in the skirt. Some damage to the lace. Neck to hem: 600mm chest: 400mm Underarm: 220mm Opening: 310mm

White cotton pique coat with deep lace trimmed collar. The coat has a round neck and a self fabric collar, trimmed with a broderie anglaise insertion patterned with daisy like flowers. Attached to this is a pleated frill of broderie anglais with a scalloped edge. Yoke is covered by the large collar and fastens with two hooks and eyes. Skirt of the coat is pleated into the yoke and fastens with three large imitation pearl buttons. Set in sleeves with small pleats at the shoulder and the cuff. Turnback cuff on one cuff. Staining on the sleeves.

White cotton dress with short puff sleeves. The neckline is square and is decorated with a lace ribbon attached. The bodice is gathered into a band at the waist. The skirt is gathered into this same band at the waist. Above the hem are three pintucks. The back bodice is gathered into the waist band at either side of the opening. There are ties at the neck and the waist. The bodice has four metal hooks and matching worked loops. The short puffed sleeve is gathered on to the shoulder and gathered into a band decorated with feather stitch. The bodice is lined with a lighter cotton. The dress is hand stitched throughout. Neck to hem: 510mm Chest: 540mm Underarm: 35mm Opening: 370mm

Chinese style robe for a child with crossover front. Brocaded? cerise with scattered gold flowers, possibly silk. Square neckline edged with black and trimmed with gold coloured braid. This decoration extends to make a curved V shape below a modesty infill on right front. Long set-in sleeves. Lined in natural cotton. Split sides and split cuff. Hand and machine sewn. Front fastened with four small pearl buttons and red yarn loops.

Chinese style trousers. Wide bodied with a narrow leg. Made from green brocade silk with a gold paisley pattern. The leg is hemmed in red satin and lined in natural fine cotton with white cotton attached at the top to form the channel for a drawstring waist. Decayed elastic in the drawstring channel. Handsewn. There is some wear on the seat and bottom of the legs. Bottom of the legs have been stitched up.

Child's cream flannel petticoat with a sleeveless bodice and round neck edged with cream feather stitching. The skirt is gathered with a scalloped edge and finished with buttonhole stitch in the same colour. The back of the neck is fastened with a drawstring of cotton tape. The back opening has two manmade loops and two mother of pearl buttons. The inside edges are all bound with cotton bias binding.

Made from white cotton with a high neckline formed with a band which is trimmed with hand worked lace.The front has a shirt placket opening trimmed on either side with the same lace as the neckline. There are three cloth covered buttons and hand worked buttonholes. Both sides of the front have a vertical band of pin tucks. The back has a yoke into which the skirt is gathered. The set in sleeve is gathered at the shoulder. Fullness at the wrist is pintucked into a band which is trimmed with matching lace.

Stationery pouch. Khaki drill folding stationery pouch in three sections. Bellowed pocket with flap secured by two press studs. Under the flap are four narrow pen holders and below the flap are four wider pen holders. Above the pocket is a flap which has two metal eyelets. This folds down over the back and fastens with two press studs. The left of the back has a short shaped flap which holds the pouch closed with a metal press stud. It opens to reveal celluloid covers to allow folding. Across the middle section attached at the bottom is a khaki poplin protector. at the top of the middle section is a short shaped flap secured with a press stud. Under the pouch closure flap is a white label "KEEP MOSQUITO REPELLANT OFF CELLULOID" All the press studs have leather washers.

An Issa/Danaki people knife from Somalia, called a jile or gile. Double edged blade. Horn or wood handle with inverted brass cone. The blade is blunt. Scabbard is on a wooden former. Hide stretched and stitched at the back. Shaped to fit the curved blade. Wire decoration at the top and a metal chape at the end. Long strap attached with brown hide strips with a metal buckle. Very dried out and deformed.

This particular bag was made by He'sesu a woman of the Gaborofi clan. Notes provoded by the donor on a luggage label
