Eastern Art (Ln 1976/07), The Swing
Painting, prince on swing. Indian, Provincial Mughal. Unsigned, 18th century. In India, swinging, as a relief from sultry heat, was an entertainment that took place during the rains. The rainy season was believed to be a time of longing and love-making. A common sight at this time of year was cranes (saras) flying against the stormy sky. As these cranes mated for life they were symbols of devoted love. This painting may have been painted to illustrate the Hindola Raga, a type of music linked with swinging and, by extension, desire.
