Carte de visite photograph of an unidentified boy made at one of William Friese-Greene's studios. The oval image seen here was typical of the carte de visite style of the 1870s.

The carte-de-visite (a French term for 'calling card') was so called because it had originally been developed in France as a pocket-sized photograph roughly the size of a calling card.
