At 10.30 in the morning on the first Saturday in May, Jack is still at rest. His attendants carry him from M Shed to the harbour and dance around him. The dance they perform is only danced twice each year - at the beginning and at the end of Jack's journey. At the end of this first dance, Jack comes to life. The attendants surround Jack, hands raised, and watch in awe as he begins to move. Once he has woken, he becomes very lively, and the dancers surround him again to dance, this time noisily with sticks. Then the procession moves off along the harbourside to begin Jack's day-long dance around the city.
